What to Eat at Work?
Stuck late in the office? Bypass the biscuits and choose a snack that will satisfy your stomach rumbles for longer.
If you’re starving because you didn’t eat lunch. Make something small to tide you over until dinner. Try wholewheat crackers or a handful of nuts.
If you still have a long night ahead of you. Eat a light meal that won’t slow you down. Try a chicken sandwich on whole-grain bread or cheese on toasted brown bread.
If you’ve had a coffee and are now past the point of being hungry. Try to nibble on a piece of fruit, some curd or a boiled egg. That way you won’t wake up in the middle of the night famished.
If plastic packets are your only option. “The occasional packet of chips is fine,” says Ursula Arens from the British Dietetic Association. “But don’t reach for them every time you work late.”
Great White Hope
If drinking tea is fashionable, then white is the new black, or green depending on your brew of choice. While research has shown that both black and green tea may improve health, studies suggest that white tea (made from buds and young leaves and one of the least-processed teas) could have the greatest benefits.
• White tea has the highest concentration of catechins, which in a US study of mice were linked with inhibiting the growth of tumours. More research is needed to confirm tea’s cancer-fighting abilities.
• It has more antioxidants than Vitamin E.
• White tea extract (WTE) can destroy 80% of certain bacterial viruses in ten minutes.
• Black, white and green tea have all been shown to help keep the heart healthy.
